Martial Arts Itch

I am Jonesing to get back into a martial art. I can’t afford the Krav Maga lessons until our house in Corndogland sells. I’ve seen two club sports offered in the area. BJJ at the college and Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate at a local athletic club.

While I want a martial art that at least drinks from the ground fighting cup I have no interest in committing fully to BJJ–mostly because I have an old injury that usually acts up when I do too much grappling.

Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate is interesting and I half considered it for a moment. However, I have no space in my garage to practice kata. I know how I learn and and lack of at-home practice space would mean a much slower advancement. Mr. Google also reveals that these blokes apparently like to smash concrete with their hands. All good and fine but I’ve been there and done that in Taekwondo. Overall I continue to look for arts that will build on the TKD base.

Last week at orientation it was announced that the college has a new Japanese teacher. During his intro. it was noted that he has a black belt in judo. This peaked my interest, however, he only is going to be here for a year so I doubt he’ll be teaching it.

We did break down all the moving boxes so once we take them to the recycling center I’ll have half a garage for practice. My plan is to remount my mook jong so I at least can do some training!

Judo prof: Ask him if he’s willing to teach you some stuff, in exchange for you being his uke (or showing him some kicking things)?

Just ’cause he’s here for too short a time to **formally** teach, doesn’t mean he’s not open to some show ‘n’ share.

  2. Gye: yeah we’ll have to see how it plays out.

    No, no I disagree.
Believe it or not, Judo will be harder on your injuries.
From what I have seen, BJJ can be experimental and gentle if necessary.

I still think you will want to find a Yang or Chen Tai Chi program for the long run,

    Cheers,

  4. DJR: no tai chi in the area so that’s out. If there were traditional tai chi in the area i’d consider it. I doubt Mr. Japan will teach judo. Plus, he’d need practice space & mats.

As for BJJ, well, that much neck crankage makes me nervous. I shall play with the mook, my heavy bag, continue to exercise, & wait for the house to sell. Then it’s a go with Krav…
