Day 4 (last night)

We’ll come back to that image in a second. First day 4:

  • Shoulders, back and biceps

The plan:

  1. Lighter weights, higher reps and pyramid sets
  2. Generally five sets on the big muscles and four sets on the smaller ones
  3. Fast and furious

I’m a fan of Dwayne Johnson’s positive attitude and training advice. I follow him on Twitter and he says the most important thing about your workout is intensity. So far supersets help with the intensity and make for a 30-40 minute workout.

The college gym:

At the last zoo they charged $50 per month to use the University’s fitness center. This zoo offers FREE access! I worked out there last night and it totally meets my needs. It has a good mixture of free weights, machines and cardio equipment. My only concern is how busy it will get when the students return. Still, to save $500 per year I can put up with a little hassle.

The gym has those nifty elliptical machines that are easy on the back and knees. Since running seems to cause me some lower back pain I’m moving my cardio to the elliptical. This will be day 5 later today.

Now back to that image. In case you need help with Zombies or other survival emergencies there is now an app for that: The U.S. Military Survival Manual for the ios. Look for it in the Apple store!

wow, free access!! never heard about any gym being free, thats just amazing, hell yeah, save up and watch those sexy students all around you, think you got a great deal there…

  2. Sometimes that’s a perk working for a college: free fitness center. :-)

Free gym: Yep, mine too (when at uni, in Seattle) — just flash ‘em your student I.D.

I found there were define ”peak hours” to the gym. Generally I’d suggest doing it during the day, and just working an hour later in the afternoon. ”After the last afternoon class, but before you go home” seems to be the peak time. Versus 10:30am? Reasonably empty.

  4. Hi Gye,

Yup. Same deal here. FREE is good. It sounds like the weight machines and free weights get buggered from 3 – 7 PM. However, the cardio equipment is still accessible. So I’ll adjust my weight routine to twice per week. Right now I’m hitting all muscle groups once each week. In the fall I’ll keep legs constant and just rotate chest/tris with shoulders/biceps on the weekends. During the week I plan to sneak in for one or two cardios.

That’s the routine I did when I was active in martial arts. Once the house we left behind sells I can then get back into a martial art.
