Random thoughts

The above slideshow is from San Diego and courtesy of my camera phone. Before the next conference I really need to get a 1gb memory card for that darn phone. You’ll see the U.S.S. Midway, some shots from my hotel room, oddities, and a few of the cars I was scoping out for the Rapture. I had my eyes on the Jaguar but there were a few other nice ones, too.

Training (what there is of it):

I returned to the usual heavy huffing and aches. Mr. Neck is behaving nicely of late. However, Mr. Lower Back has a dull ache that did not go away after a week off. I suspect it’s from the single and double leg take-downs. The good news is that I think I stand a chance of pulling them off on the mystical street. The bad news is that the ache almost feels like arthritis.

I came back to a Wednesday class that focused on Teacher’s dummy form. I totally forgot the middle and ending bars so I spent most of the night trying to get those parts back. It still amazes me how quickly some forms come while others fall apart really fast if you don’t practice them.

I think I’ve reached the point where I may let my nunchuka kata go. This was a tournament kata that I learned for the Tae Kwon Do tournament days. I barely practice it at home anymore and now with the dummy form it’s just too much too keep in my head. It’s 70% “flash” and only a small portion of it is practical. Seriously: who walks around with nunchukas? I have, however, maintained my Tae Kwon Do forms. They are not tournament ready but I still review them weekly.

I think I’m frustrated with the fact that I’m not learning as fast as I’d like to. My focus is on my current job, up coming job commitments, and the job hunt. I don’t see this changing anytime soon so here I sit in a placeholder martial art. The upside is that I have picked up “ground-and-pound” which may come in handy if my lower back does not go South. The downside is that my BJJ light sucks. I’ve pretty much given up on trying to drive back into the city on Saturdays so this means I see BJJ light a couple times a month.

My modest goal for 2011 is to workout five times per week at home. I’m trying to loose some of the Holiday food/sick of the job hunt/job stress drink martinis gut that I’ve picked up. I have workouts that range from 1 hour to 20 minutes so, in theory, I should be able to amp things up. I’ve also cleaned up the diet but still allow room for some junk food. We’ll see how this goes.

Totally out of order but I guess on Monday night Teacher taught some hip throws. It sounds like what I missed were things I’ve done before. Still, I like hip throws — especially if they are not the high head-over-heels kind that were taught Monday. We have a housewife who attends and she was totally stoked over the fact that she could throw a 200 lb man. She wanted to throw me but I politely declined.

Lastly, the Bob Patterson Memorial Library is mostly complete. There’s maybe a dozen more that I’ve borrowed from libraries but do not own. One day I’ll remember them and add to the library.

  1. Hi Bob, it is going to take at least five workouts a week to get rid of this holiday blubber for me too. It will be gone by March. Each year it seems to take longer and longer to get rid of it.

Like the San Diego photos. I spent 10 years of my life there, many happy memories, and a few sad ones as well. When you get on that Midway and look around, it brings it right home how strong the U.S. is. And that is one of the older carriers around. Did you have any Mexican food while in S.D? It is the best.

For sure I ate Mexican — twice!
    :-)

  3. Hey Bob,

Thanks for the pics… you have seen more of San Diego’s water line than I have recently and I live here!

Hope you did not bring the chucks with you to CA… since Enter the Dragon, they are illegal here… too many kids started fighting each other with them.

The wife makes great Mexican fare so I guess I’m lucky there.

  4. You have a gorgeous city! I plan to bring my wife there one day for a vacation and I’d love to live there if we could afford it!

  5. Dojo Rat says:

From the tune “Indiana Bob visits Cali” by Tom Petty:

By Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne

Eddie waited `til he finished high school
He went to Hollywood, got a tattoo
He met a girl out there with a tattoo too
    The future was wide open

They moved into a place they both could afford
He found a nightclub he could work at the door
She had a guitar and she taught him some chords
    The sky was the limit

Dude; if you had Mexican, you had better have had Tequila instead of Vodka.

Nice to get out of CornDogVille, eh?

  6. Ha! Nice one! Sadly, no tequila. I stuck with my dry martinis. The upside? Two vendors had open bars so I drank the good stuff.

California was great. Despite the messed up economy I’ve not ruled out smaller cities in California. The big ones, I fear, are not doable. I’m working on something… we’ll see if anything comes of it.

San Diego has moved into my top five U.S. cities. For sure I plan to come back their with Mrs. Patterson and vacation.
