The Lord of Bad Acting:
- And so ends Seagal’s role as a fake cop.
“He tendered his resignation about three and a half weeks ago maybe,” Sheriff Newell Normand said Friday (October 1). “
(Prime) Chuck Norris:
- Chucky wants you to pull the trigger on voting.
In its first month, 180,000 people viewed the humorous ad at YouTube, about nine times more than a serious NRA voting-registration ad that stars rocker Ted Nugent and has been around longer.
The News:
- The ultimate karate marketing idea?
Heidi Klum took her daughter Leni to karate class in L.A. on Saturday morning, Oct. 2.
- Teacher blames MMA. So do I!
The idea seems almost traitorous, or at the very least unpatriotic: a well-respected American boxing promoter helping the Chinese Boxing Association while the U.S. amateur team is in shambles following a disastrous Olympics.
- In related news, here’s one about a Chinese MMA fighter.
The first Chinese fighter to fight in North America, Zhang dealt with the pressure like a veteran and fought like one too.
- Some Taekwondo students help raise $1,000.
The students of Chosun Taekwondo Academy, a local martial arts and hatha yoga center, recently hosted their annual Chosun Leadership Team Book & Bake Sale at Lewis Park in Warwick.
- Okay, this movie sounds interesting. Here’s the trailer in case you are interested.
Don’t be surprised if this is the first time you’ve heard about The Warrior’s Way; it’s been flying under the radar. The Warrior’s Way – which I’m calling a “Ninja Western” — was written and directed by Sngmoo Lee and produced by Barrie M. Osborne
- Tyson weighs in on MMA.
“I know 100 per cent that a boxer (could win),” Tyson said. “As long as he learns how to grapple and wrestle, he could do great. You’ve got to go in there respecting the sport, and not just thinking you’re going to knock somebody out every time. It’s a complicated sport, but a good boxer has to be a great athlete anyway.”
- Who wants to be a bad girl?
So I took another leap of faith….I would have a camp in my hometown of Indio, California. I would invite women from all over the country to attend and I would only charge a small fee to cover food and other incidentals.
- Two years after its Hong Kong release, Ip Man opens in New York City.
That may have had less to do with the excellent fight sequences, directed by Sammo Hung with the help of one of Mr. Ip’s sons, than with the appeals to nationalism and, particularly, the heavy-handed depiction of the occupying Japanese as giggling sadists or implacable killing machines.
- Here’s another article about digital Taekwondo.
Most people associate taekwondo with the image of two people fighting to the death. However, that image, while it might appear in a Korean action movie, is far from reality. The modern sport features an electronic scoring system using chest guards and shoes with built-in sensors.
- Self-defense training pays off for one Texas woman.
“She didn’t cower down,” Bryant said. “She let the assailant know that she wasn’t going to give in to any of what he was thinking. She kept her face forward did not turn her back to that person, and I just have to commend her on standing her ground.”
- A Marine dies during boxing practice.
Lance Cpl. Libardo Jimenez died march 20. Officials said Jimnez was boxing with his team when a team member hit him in the head.
- A martial artist is stabbed to death outside of a bar.
The other, Chai Eun Hillmann, an aspiring actor and a martial arts expert, was stabbed twice in the torso and killed.
- After all these years Jhoon Rhee is still at it. Here’s a short bio. of Mr. Rhee.
For 45 years, the 79-year-old Rhee has driven to the Capitol before sunrise three days a week to teach martial arts and self defense to Members of Congress. Rhee’s physique belies his age. He stands 5’6″ and weighs 140 lbs, boasting a stout chest and angular shoulders. His body tapers to his waist. Rhee could pass for someone in his early 50s.
- This could be a typical Sunday at the Patterson house.
The would-be Bruce Lee was remorseful, according to the police report. As cops put the cuffs on him Pereyra apologized and said he’d been drinking and watching kung fu movies.
- Rumor has it she’s applied for a job at the Swamp Ridge Saloon.
Susan Sykes, 49-year-old bust model, performed karate with her massive breasts which smashed beer cans, a baseball bat, wood bricks and a watermelon.
The Blogs:
- Rick has an interesting post up.
I previously posted an article about a martial art about a martial art which combines Taijiquan and Bagua Zhang.
- I wonder if this is why Teacher no longer practices his karate?
While karate stances undoubtedly provide a solid base from which to fire off strikes they tend to hamper rather than support movement, while Muay Thai fighting stances deliver on both counts.
- Looks like Lori teaches what probably saved the aforementioned Texas woman.
And even if no “warning signs” are going off, a woman should still take precautions with men she is less familiar with.
Low Tech found some videos that examine knife defense.
There is a LOT of garbage out there regarding knife and edged weapons defence. I am not so sure about one or two of his points but overall, I found the videos to be very interesting and thought provoking.
- The Martialist is my find of the week. Here’s one for all you Count Dante fans! Although if you are a fan you’ll be sorely disappointed after you watch the video.
The Kata Dante may indeed be the dance of death — but for the students who took an afternoon seminar from some arm of the Black Dragon Fighting Society and then thought themselves well-equipped for self-defense, the only deadly dance they’ve truly learned is the future twitching of their own battered corpses. Kata Dante combines valid kung fu techniques in a combination so ridiculous that at best it can only instill a false sense of… badassery, a mistaken confidence in one’s ability to rend, tear, and beat one’s opponents into submission. This false sense of confidence can only lead one to his doom.
The Videos:
- The first find comes from Wim’s newsletter. If you have not signed up for it I’d encourage you to visit Wim’s site and do so!
Some insanely good advice from Dan Inosanto. I tell this to all my fighters but a lot of them still don’t get it.
- The second find is another one from The Martialist. Here you get to see a video that exposes the myth of “Jailhouse Rock”!
52 Blocks. Jailhouse Rock. Known by these and other names, such as Comstock or Closing Gates, 52 Blocks is alleged by those who promulgate its myth to be a prison fighting system — a martial art practiced in the penal system of the United States, either developed within its walls or brought to them by unjustly imprisoned descendants of African slaves. The assertion begs the question: Just what is 52 Blocks, and does it really exist?

That was an interesting video, Bob. I’ve not heard of that Jailhouse rock. I like it
JL – Yeah I need to research that more. I used to work in a prison so it really caught my eye. It would be a great graduate thesis topic, I think!
