Let’s start off with the obvious!
- Brock Lesnar is UFC Champ!
The 31-year-old freak of nature stopped Randy Couture at 3:07 of the second round at UFC 91 on Saturday to capture the heavyweight title in only his fourth professional mixed martial arts fight.
I’ve seen his other bouts and really want to see this one. I checked the usual places but they are taking the videos down faster than Dojo Rat can tap a keg. You can see interviews at UFC.com. Regardless, congrats to the new champ!
- Apparently running out of ideas Hollywood is remaking the Karate Kid. Now what was wrong with the original?
But with studios as desperate as ever for “new” feature ideas, it was bound to pop into someone’s head eventually that maybe Karate Kid is due for a comeback.
- Too lazy to learn a martial art? Then try World of Kung Fu! Just what I need: More time on the computer!
World of Kung Fu now has over 250,000 registered users exploring the massive 3D virtual world set in ancient China.
- Japan wins in World Karate Championships.
Natsuki Fujiwara and Yuka Sato brought hosts Japan two individual gold medals in the women’s kumite events at the World Karate Championships on Saturday.
- Yet another article about martial sport vs. martial art. This time the topic is judo!
Has the Japaneseness inherent in judo been stripped away to accommodate forms of judo that do not adhere as closely to its traditions? Revisions in the current system suggest that may be the case.
- Haitian uses Karate skills to fend off robbers! If it’s true he got lucky. Read the article and you’ll find out the robber picked his gun back up before fleeing.
Louimar told them to leave him alone and when they wouldn’t, he knocked two of the men to the ground with what he called “karate chops.”
- 69-year-old Karate black belt teaches self-defense to seniors.
Yesterday at the Vista library, seniors got some practical tips from a 69-year-old black belt in karate.
- University faculty protest boxing match.
We are troubled that a university with an internationally renowned academic medical center is letting campus facilities be used for this purpose.
That’s all good and fine but perhaps Vanderbilt faculty should protest all of the “violent” club sports that students can participate in?
- Aikido
- Aussie football
- Brazilian Jujitsu
- Ice Hockey
- Karate
- Kung Fu
- Taekwondo
- Wrestling
All undergraduate and graduate students officially enrolled at Vanderbilt University are eligible to join a club. All faculty and staff are eligible to join any club.
- Martial arts instructor arrested for possession of marijuana.
Officials say Lewis suddenly assaulted the deputy then he tried to run on foot.
From the blogs:
- Enjoy it before they take it down: Couture Vs. Lesnar.
They were on the ground and on their feet. Pretty good fight! All I know is I would not want to be in the ring with either of these guys.
- Pat Parker talks about a judo rule that annoys him. Pat: See above article about judo!
Bob, maybe you want to volunteer to be the enforcement agent for this rule?
Pat: Dojo Rat is better equipped to make gender assessments. He’s got several year’s worth of “Hippie Chick of the Month” experience. Though if he ever needs an assistant… Regardless, I’ve been out of the rule enforcement business for 15 years and plan to keep it that way.
- Zimmer has some interesting thoughts on senior self-defense.
After watching the story I had the feeling that it was endorsing old folks fighting for their purses?
- Miller has a thoughtful post on Karate and tradition.
The responsibility that a teacher or senior has toward students or juniors eclipses any responsibility she has to mimic past methods, especially when better methods and better information are available.
- Ezequiel claims he has mystical self-defense skills.
It is really amazing how when we use mentally pronounced words coming from our heart and not mind, stops any attacks toward us or our family members.
I don’t know about that but I prefer a good stiff jab or a right cross any day! See the video I close with to find out why.
- If you have not done so already please take the time to visit Nathan’s NEW Convocation of Combat Arts. I just visited and I’m amazed at how many diverse martial artists he’s gathered! 58 members and growing…
- Finally, the kicking post that won’t stop kicking! Side note but yesterday I did my leg routine and added those Bill Wallace exercises. Let’s put it this way: I did not look like Wallace and this morning I hobbled out of bed like an old codger! Anyhow, yet another reader sent me a video and I’ll close with it in a minute. I should clarify my opinion (my opinion and a 50 cents will buy you a cup of coffee so take it for what it’s worth!) on kicking in shoes in a street situation: Conditions vary. Depending on your shoes, the surface, and the traction you may be able to pull off all Taekwondo kicks or Karate kicks. Then again, maybe not. I’ve had instructors encourage experimentation because not every surface will lend itself to spinning or pivoting kicks. So my point is to not get into the habit of thinking your “go-to” sport kick will work on the street. In certain situations it might and in others you could be in trouble. Now the video: As I said to Nathan once in an e-mail, “Sometimes I don’t agree with me!” This video shows the use of a reverse side kick and a front snap kick in a street situation. Note the reverse side was not picture-perfect but he did pull if off in shoes!
- Video Here. (Thanks goes out to Jason for this one)
Notice that two kicks and a punch keep the attacker at bay!
