Last week started with Kimbo Slice and so does this week:

  • Looks like Slice’s star is derailed but what’s more interesting is the possible issues with EliteXC.

In a radio interview Monday, Petruzelli hinted he’d been instructed not to take the fight to the ground. He has since gone back on his statements…The Florida State Boxing Commission is investigating the matter.

  • These stories always amaze me. Here’s another one!

Either way, five years later Manning was blinded by a bullet in a bar fight. And ever since, he has had to adjust.

Now a world champion in blind judo…

  • 10-year-old black belt teaches other kids her craft.

Maggie, of Watertown, is a black belt in karate and is absorbed in teaching other kids about self defense.

It was fear that brought 52 women to a free self-defense workshop in the Middletown YMCA’s basement studio Wednesday night.

Fear over a woman kidnapped outside the Blockbuster Video store on Route 211 in August and raped.

  • Man I hope someday when I’m 78 I’ll STILL be thrashing!

The 78-year-old martial arts expert has just completed the rare feat in New Zealand judo circles of graduating to a seventh dan red-and-white belt.

The Broken Arrow star signed up for martial arts lessons in a bid to get over the lifelong inadequacy he felt over his lack of height and discovered he had a knack for “kicking butts”.

  • China to feature prime time biography on Bruce Lee.

“We’ve only seen the glorious side of Bruce Lee – he comes out all guns blazing. His films are entertaining but very few people know what injuries he suffered and what grievances he suffered,” said Danny Chan, the Hong Kong actor who plays Lee.

From the blogs:

I see a parallel here in the syncretistic approach to religion. There is a core approach to the spiritual, this equates to Jun Fan Gung Fu.

  • Finally, John Vesia ponders the usefulness of weapons.

I’ve never been a huge fan of traditional Okinawan weapons (kobudo). After all, karate – the empty hand way – forgoes the need for anything besides relying on the human body as a means for self defense.

He then goes on to talk about how he favors the sai. I’ve had some stick and baton training. In addition I learned two nunchuka katas on my road to 1st dan in taekwondo. The katas are definitely tournament katas and while I practice the second one I’ve all but forgotten the first. I’d say that 70% of the kata that I still practice is for show. However, the other 30% has techniques that could be used. Would I used the chuks as a weapon? No. I really think they are too unpredictable to be useful. Give me a stick any day! Interestingly I found a video that shows nunchuka in a sporting competition. I did not know this kind of competition existed so I think I’ll close the news with it. Enjoy!
