For the week of Oct. 5th here we go!

- Arguably the big shocker this week is the Kimbo Slice upset. It appears that Shamrock was deemed unfit to fight so they replaced him with Petruzelli. It also appears that Slice suffered his first loss!
Petruzelli became the first man to defeat Kimbo Slice in a sanctioned bout. A clipping right hand did the trick.
- Mixed martial artists push their bodies farther than they probably should in my humble opinion.
Being able to withstand the pain is often as important as inflicting it on an opponent. In a sport that tests one fighter’s will against another’s, the unwillingness to flinch is often a fighter’s best weapon.
- Iranian wins Berlin karate tournament.
Iran’s karate team claimed the championship of the Berlin International Karate Tournament on Saturday night.
- A 64-year-old man uses his karate skills to ward off three armed attackers! Hey who says traditional martial arts are worthless!
Edward, who had practised karate informally since the age of 12, grabbed the gunman’s hand, prompting his accomplices to produce knives. “I grabbed one of the guys by the wrist and used a kicking technique to trip the gunman. The other two fought back, but I used a series of punches to the upper body that cuts of oxygen supply to the brain.”
- Japanese women capture world judo title.
The Japanese female judoka steamrolled in the eight-team competition, brutalizing Germany 5-0…
- Fort Benning hosts all-military martial arts tournament. I tried learning more about this but it looks like the Army has their site protected from us civilians.
More than 300 soldiers from around the world competed in this weekend’s 2008 U.S. Army Combatives Tournament held at Fort Benning.
- Who says you can’t learn Karate on the Internet? (I do!) For a fee this guy will tailor you a personalized online training program.
InterDojo.com continues to evolve as the largest online eLearning website in the martial arts and fitness world.
- I’m closing the news with Kung-Fu Election. If you like politics and the video game Mortal Kombat you just HAVE to check out THIS GAME!
The concept is simple. Pick a player and try to literally kick the electoral stuffing out of someone from across the aisle.
Now onto the blogs…
- Browne comments on a problem that faces a lot of martial arts including taekwondo.
TKD is interesting in that respect. Though it was founded within the memory of living men, its combat effectiveness has degraded unususally quickly in historical terms…There’s a saying about the students of Yip Man, the Wing Chun master who taught young Bruce Lee, among other martial arts luminaries.
They say the first generation of Yip Man’s students were great fighters, the second generation were great technicians, and the third generation lived off the reputation of the first and second generations.
I could not agree more with his assessment and if you read anything from this week’s news it should be his post!
- TDA Training is back in full-swing so check out a few of Nathan’s recent posts.
In all the drilling, training, scenarios, and sparring we do to prepare for the worst, one of the best things you can do to really be prepared is to cripple yourself. Is there a possibility you’ll have to fight while hurt, blinded, maimed, or just hobbled by injury or accident? Of course.
- Patrick Parker thinks that BJJ may actually stand for “Basically Just Judo“. I let ya’ll decide!
A few days ago, Dave Chesser posted an article in which he suggested that the acronym BJJ, which a lot of people mistakenly think means Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, actually means Basically Just Judo. I laughed my proverbial asterisk off…
The blogs were relatively scare this week so lets close with a new video! This one has some very important lessons for all martial artists. Namely, as that old saying goes, beware the person who’s practiced a punch or kick 1,000 times! Also, sometimes simple is good! See what I’m talking about in in Capoeira v. Muay Thai. This one is priceless!

Oh man I loved that video. Everything about it.
Also that fight circle reminded me of the one in the beginning of Rambo III. That was with sticks…but still cool.

Short and sweet. Great find. I don’t think we’ll be seeing capoeira in the UFC anytime soon.

Ikigai – Isn’t that just wonderful?
Honestly, if was still helping teach low belts in taekwondo I’d suggest to sabum that they all have to watch this! Several good lessons in very quick video.
John – No kidding! I bet the Muay Thai guy could have waited until Caporia man wore himself out!
