I was thinking about posting martial arts news but I am really not in the mood.
So I’m on “vacation” in a rental house that’s full of 15+ inlaws, two bathrooms, and limited airconditioning. Somehow the tradition got started to do this thing yearly and let me tell you it’s just…awesome! Last year we drove 14 hours straight to Cape freak’n Cod. This year at least it was a short six hours to Lake Geneva.
First, we have this ritual of team cooking. Evereyone is assigned cooking partners and each team gets to cook “a meal” for 15 people. NO pressure there and there’s nothing like going grocery shopping on your vacation, cooking, and then doing dishes for 15 people!
AWESOME!
Oh did I mention that I’m an introvert and events like this drain me? I can only do so much uncomfortalbe and forced small talk before I want to crawl out of my skin. And it gets worse when some of the inlaws are out of my income bracket and range of interests. Honestly, how much drinking can a group do? And seriously, hearing about the Boston cultural scene is definately NOT Bob. I may work in academia but I’ve still managed to keep one foot grounded in reality!
Somehow I esacped the latest round of “party games” by going to my room. Part of the crew is going out drinking…AGAIN. Don’t get me wrong: Right crowd and right interests and I’d love to go out. However I ran out of patience right after they almost forgot to come get us for dinner. Thankfully I found a laptop and here I am.
So we’re at a “surprise” retirement dinner earlier this evening for one of the inlaws who’s…retiring. We were told with less than a day’s time that people are giving him gifts. Oh joy, no pressure there and thanks for telling us in advance! So we’ll be mailing a gift! Ug! That’s been another dominant theme: Zero organization! Heck, half the house left for dinner before someone remembered to tell Bob and his wife! Thanks a lot, gang!
Then we’re at that restaurant and a relative asks me if I have my black belt on. I politely said “no, it’s at home.” This degraded into “man it’d be cool to see you break some bricks!” All I’m thinking is yeah, I could do some breaking and it might not be bricks…
I’m wondering if I should propose a chin na demonstration tommorow night? I can think of a few people that be good candidates to demonstrate on…
