Taekwondo practice was one of those nights where we tore up our legs. After warm-ups and floor drills we moved into combos on the paddles. After that we got in a circle and did speed training with the paddles and pads. Basically we went in a circle kicking the other persons paddle as fast as we could.
From here we practiced breaking on the pads and re-breakables. Then we closed with power training on the sheild. The highlight here was the step-behind side-kick. This one is a favoritie and I practice it at home. I can knock over my free-standing bag which has 250 lbs of sand in it. You can cover a lot of distance with this kick and it has to be one of the more powerful kicks in taekwondo. I’d also include it in my self-defense arsenal. If you keep it low and aim for the ribs or hip joint it has the potential to cut someone in half!
The only other news to report is that I got kicked in the face. I caught a lead leg hook kick to my blind side in some light no-contact sparring. So much for no contact. Yeah it left a mark under my right eye and it also knocked me on my butt. Oh well, it could have been much worse.
