Update on Don’s Guns…

July 27, 2008 · 6 Comments

It looks like police caught the persons who broke into Don’s Guns.

The case of a stolen car and a gun store burglary is the latest in a series of instances of teenagers being charged in high-profile crimes…Police have not disclosed the number or types of weapons stolen, but officers speculated the number may have been small…

Well given all the other guns on the streets of Indianapolis I suppose I should not get too worked up over a few more. Why should I worry if teens from an impoverished area of the city have military assualt weapons?

I also received an angry e-mail from someone who read my original post. This gentleman accuses me of being a liberal moon bat who want’s to take away all guns. He also cites the recent Supreme Court ruling and uses about as much profanity as I do when I’m working in the back yard.

I’m not saying we should take away guns from sports enthusiasts. Nor am I against law abiding citizens owning guns. I just think a certain level of fire power is only suited for the hands of law enforcement or the military (you know, the ones who receive countless hours of training and re-certification). I also think gun law enforcement is a joke. Heck, you can get a gun on the streets of Indianapolis for $150!

I think there should be mandatory licensing and firearm training before you can even own a gun. I’ve always said we have a harder test for driving and owning a car than we do for gun ownership (and most Hoosiers are piss-poor drivers). One would think the gun lobby and gun dealers would clamor for this because this would be a big business opportunity for certified trainers. Instead they spend millions lobbying federal government.

Finally, Tully says it best:

It’s hard to argue with someone who can’t at least acknowledge the benefit of keeping guns away from people like Kenna Ryle.

Dare I say even pointless?

And since I’m on a roll let me weigh in on owning a gun for home protection. The only way it becomes effective is if you carry your handgun with you in a holster every waking minute. When you are asleep you better have it strapped on you or keep it very near and in both cases it needs to be always loaded.

If you’re sitting in front of the TV half asleep and someone home invades your residence your Dirty Harry Special is not going to do you must good tucked away in your closet. About the only time it does do any good is if you hear a break-in and have time to get to your weapon. Past that it’s a security blanket and in my opinion you’re better off with a good alarm system.

And don’t even try to tell me how my local militia or my K-mart Special is going to protect me when the government sends black helicoptors in to take us all over! I’m sorry but I’m better off relying on my cat for defense than I am a bunch of overweight and undereducated hilljacks who mainly consist of military wannabes. And honestly, deer rifles, shotguns, and a few automatic weapons would not do much good if the government really did want to take over.
