Quick update on that MMA drill for the three of you who told me you’re trying it…
- Try two continious knee strikes then switch step and keep repeating
- Try adding ankle weights
I imagine you could mix in other exercises besides push-ups between the five minute intervals, too.
Taekwondo is the same old kick. With no goal in mind I’m really just holding ground, polishing, and helping get the remaining students ready for their last test. I have had time to work on that Korean short stick form that I picked up at a seminar. The bad news is we’ve just not had time to practice the techniques and strikes much. However, the form is something that can be worked alone. The first three legs of the form are static. Once you have that down you are challenged to create your own fourth leg. I’ve done that by integrating some kicks and strikes. I’m also getting close to taping it just for the hell of it. Maybe by the end of August I’ll feel good enough about it to throw it out there.
I’ve long since integrated forms, fundamentals, and bag work into my normal at-home workout. So for the immediate future most of what I learned in taekwondo will not degrade. However, if I get serious about another martial art that has forms I’m not sure I can keep it all straight. I suppose we shall see. I am looking long and hard at Praying Mantis. I can’t afford Chin Na and Mantis at the same time so it’s one or the other. Tonight in Chin Na I’ll talk to the instructor. I know Mantis has some Chin Na. It also has two person sets, sticking and flowing, lots of forms, and a somewhat unorthodox way of striking.
Practitioners of the Seven Star Praying Mantis system don’t just learn the forms and two-man sets to become proficient at this style’s default fighting range. They practice a free style exercise called “sticky hands” that takes all the theory, concepts and techniques and puts them into practice in the realm of trapping.

Kinda’ sad to see the old class go, you’ve put a lot of time in there…
But on to new stuff!
Here’s from your link to the mantis system:
“At times a Seven Star Praying Mantis stylist may face a kicking-oriented attacker. He can deflect and stick to the opponent’s kicks and enter to a trapping range and set up a counter-attack.”
Wonder how TKD will match up with mantis?
I also think you should hold a fundraiser. We need to put you through the entire mantis system, both classes.
Hmmm…. count me in for a few bucks. Let’s come up with a “put Bob through school” campaign!

LOL!
I suspect most taekwondo people would have trouble with Mantis in-fighting.
I talked to the instructor tonight…you can read about that in my next post.
But feel free to send me money. LOTS of money!
