Martial Arts News 5.7.08

- Iran to host Asian Taekwondo Championship
The Islamic Republic is to play host to the fifth Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships which will be held next year, an official says.
- Another MMA film debuts:
“Redbelt” is set in the world of mixed martial arts, the increasingly popular hybrid of grappling and striking, violence and strategy. So, naturally, writer-director David Mamet insists it is not a “martial-arts movie.”
- Busari calls Jackie Chan the King of comedy kung fu.
With his compact but wiry 5-foot, 9-inch frame, Jackie Chan seems to pale into insignificance when compared with muscle-bound Hollywood tough guys such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
But combining extraordinary athleticism and an acrobatic style, Chan could probably take them both on in a fight and emerge victorious.
Maybe he could take Arnold. I’m not so sure about Van Damme who once fought professionally.
- New York and State Senator Joseph wants to legalize MMA.
The sport Mix Martial Arts, made popular by the Ultimate Fighting Championship, continues to grow in popularity, but it’s not legal here in New York State.
- Two MMA fighters explain what their sport is.
But the most applicable techniques used in modern MMA have been taken from various traditional martial arts including boxing, Thai boxing, karate, wrestling, judo, jujitsu, and tae kwon do among others.
MMA has taken traditional martial arts by the scruff of the neck and streamlined them into a more accessible sport.
- Karate is a family tradition for at least one family.
In his quest for just the right sensei and style he wandered to the local club, at the Brentwood Community Centre, and knew immediately Kimura Shukokai Karate was for him.
- New dojo opens in Maple Park, IL.
It is truly a great pleasure to announce that the Westwind Center for Aikido and Traditional Japanese Weaponry will celebrate its grand opening on July 20th, 2008…
- Dan Inosanto’s daughter makes her directorial debut.
So when Inosanto decided to write, direct and star in her first feature film, it made sense that it would take place in the world she knows so well. But what might catch people off guard is the story she chose to tell.
Here’s the newest video I could find of Dan Inosanto in action. Enjoy!
Finally, I’ll close with some pretty good videos from Black Belt Magazine. These appeared in their most recent E-mail newsletter:

I particularly like the “handshake”, “lapel grab chin jab”, and “jugular notch”. Some of this is very similar to the stuff they taught me in PPCT.
Simple is good!
