Another Martial Option? Japanense Jujitsu…

April 13, 2008 · 5 Comments

Come this summer I’ll be starting a new martial art in a commercial school. Right now all roads point to Chin Na. However, I like to be thorough and continue to rule in and rule out all the non-profit schools I can find. Well someone brought to my attention that Indiana University offers karate and Japanese Jujitsu. Now I am an alumni of Indiana University-Bloomington. However I suspect that both clubs are for “students and staff” of IUPUI.

I’ve contacted both the University and the instructors and await responses. The karate seems very unlikely regardless of the style but I am very interested in the jujitsu. The instructor holds a 6th degree in Shugen Ryu Jujitsu and also holds lower dans in Chinese Kempo and Japanese Kenpo. (See Kempo or Kenpo)

Japanese jujutsu systems typically place more emphasis on throwing, immobilizing and pinning, joint-locking, choking, and strangling techniques (as compared with other martial arts systems such as karate)…In jujutsu, there are five main sectors (“arts”) of training. The first, the Art of Blocking, is used to defend against attacks. The second, the Art of the Fulcrum Throw, is employed in modern judo. The third, the Art of the Non-fulcrum Throw is employed through throws that involve little or no contact with the opponent. The fourth, the Art of Escaping (Hakko-Dori), is very crucial in many styles of Jujutsu. The fifth, the Art of Striking (Atemi-Waza), is used more by modern jujutsuka who do not employ body armor.

Assuming I can get past the University’s bureaucratic red tape I’d be very willing to show up at class and take a good thrashing to check out their curriculum.

We shall see…
