March 23, 2008 by Bob Patterson
I’m still tweaking my ancient Chinese secrets but they seem to working. Here’s the martial arts news and blog posts for 3.22.28:
- Jim Haynes offers his thoughts on some martial arts bashing that he’s seen on various martial arts sites.
Recently I’ve seen a lot of hatred and bashing on E-Budo, Martial Arts Planet, and other similar sites…People who have no idea of what they are talking about, show up on the internet where they feel safe and invincible, and begin to cast stones at a person, who (in some cases) they have never met.
- The Kansas City Star has an article about how the mixed martial arts craze is impacting movies and television.
“Mixed martial arts is growing so fast because … hey … we all loved ‘Karate Kid,’ but karate is boring,” says “Never Back Down” star Sean Faris. “Now all the fighting techniques have been combined and anything can happen. It’s instant gratification. And that’s our world today.”
Mixed martial arts is the biggest growth spectator sport in America today.
- WorthPlaying talks about a new video game that alleges to help sharpen your martial arts reflexes.
Ninja Reflex uses a series of martial arts challenges to test gamers’ reflexes, sharpen their hand-eye coordination, and measure their reaction times to the millisecond.
- The Sun-Sentinel has an article about Muay Thai fighter Eric Rivera.
Eric Rivera flirted with karate, taekwondo and kung fu, but fell in love with Muay Thai.
The 2005 Florida International University graduate from Davie traveled to Thailand for two months where he learned “the art of eight limbs” at a Kaewsamrit Gym camp in Bangkok.
- The 14th annual karate championships begin in Nepal today.
The 14th National Men’s Open Full Contact Karate Championship and the seventh edition of women’s Full Contact Karate are all set to begin from Saturday at the Covered Hall of National Sports Council.
- This article talks about a recent demonstration of a martial art that I’ve never heard of.
Kyuki-do is a complete self-defense martial art that combines the kicking and striking techniques of tae kwon do, the throwing and grappling moves of judo and jujitsu, the joint locks of hapkido and the practice of kobudo (traditional weapons) into one art.
- The LA Times announces that MMA is going prime-time on CBS May 31st. If you’re a Kimbo Slice fan you’ll want to catch this one! (See DR’s posts here and here)
The network’s 9-to-11 p.m. slot for fights in MMA’s Elite Xtreme Combat organization will be headlined by a main event for the middleweight title, pitting champion Robbie Lawler against Scott Smith at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Former street fighter Kimbo Slice also will fight a heavyweight opponent on the show, with other matchups to be announced at a later date.
- The Keizer Times announces that three local karate students have advanced to a regional tournament.
Three Keizer karate students advanced from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Oregon State District Karate Championship to the AAU West Coast Regional Karate Championship during a tournament held at Grants Pass High School on Saturday, March 15th.
- SuperJudo TV (who knew!) has a new video on arm bar entries.
- Sean Aiken over at One Week Job becomes a martial arts instructor for the week.
That’s a wrap for this week!
