Striking Thoughts

The Chain Punch

January 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

One of my goals for this year was to run more featured videos that examine a particular martial arts topic. Since I’m suffering from insomnia and have the time I thought we’d examine the Wing Chun chain punch. This also gave me the chance to figure out how to use the “Post to WordPress” feature in VodPod. Here’s a good explanation of the punch from from Human Weapon: from bpatterson67.vodpod. posted with vodpod
This video along with the others I’ve found can be seen in my right side bar. I’ll also link to them in this post:

  • Master Kane explains the punch here.
  • A beginner gets medieval on the wall bag.
  • Wing Chun in a self-defense setting.

All of these videos do a good job of demonstrating one of Wing Chun’s core techniques, the chain punch. Also, note how in the last video the attacker almost always goes back to this core technique. He uses the chain punch in combination with other Wing Chun techniques.

When I was taught the chain punch the message was similar: “If you remember nothing else when you are attacked we drill this over and over so you respond with something. This is better than just standing there and getting hit.”

Sadly, what little skills I had in Wing Chun are eroded. However, there is a lesson that any martial artist can take from Wing Chun. Pick two or three “go-to” combinations from your art and drill them weekly. If you have a heavy bag, wall bag, or partner practice them that way. If you lack these shadow box. The point is to do the techniques over and over until they become instinctive. Then, if you are ever attacked, hopefully you’ll respond with something as opposed to just standing there and getting hit.
