Yes, I actually get mail and yes again that I sometimes even respond. In fact, I like to occasionally post some of the more interesting mails. First, a comment to this post.

I am in my forties and I have fused vertabrae from a broken back and because of your recommendation on boxing and in particular the book you just recommended above I will start training in boxing just to get in shape and hold my own within the context of my age and my injury. The book “Boxing an American Martial Art” is now on the way to my house. So thanks and I will finally put my Muay Thai bag to good use.

Just be sure your doctor OKs it before you try any physical training. I have one fusion in my neck but have been cleared by the specialist. In fact, the stretching from taekwondo has really helped my neck and back. Really the only think my fusion limits is turning my head fully on any turning kicks. However, I can still nail it and I can still take a good shot to the head too.

Depending on the extent of your fusions you may have trouble body shifting so you’ll have to rely more on your footwork, or adopt a straight-line approach. You might also consider this book: Jun Fan Gung Fu by K. Seaman.  There’s some straight line drills and hand techniques that I’ve found quite useful on the bag. It’s not boxing per se. In fact, a lot of the stances and hand techniques are influenced by Chinese boxing. Still, you might be able to create some drills from them that suit your physical limits.

The mail:

Have you ever thought about a martial arts ONLY blog? I like reading you but don’t care about your politics. Alfred

First, thanks for reading! Second, yes I’ve considered it. This blog started out as a non-martial arts blog and then evolved. I just don’t have the time to maintain two blogs so for now you’ll have to put up with my pontifications.

You really are full of shit. Lorrie

You think?!?!?
;)

Regardless, thanks for reading, Lorrie.
